Dee Ellingwood to Join from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

(December 3, 2013) The Health Collaborative is pleased to announce Dee Ellingwood has joined the organization as Lead Executive, Collective Impact on Health. Mr. Ellingwood is serving as a loaned executive provided through the generosity of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he served as Senior Vice President of Planning and Business Development.

Mr. Ellingwood will be leading the Health Collaborative’s effort to establish the Greater Cincinnati Community’s Collective Impact Agenda on Health. The work is a multi-stakeholder process with three primary functions:

• Identify the community’s best opportunities to improve health and health care delivery
• Design and align strategies and activities that will leverage progress toward set goals
• Develop data driven systems to measure results

The work is modeled after the well studied Collective Impact strategy for large scale social change. The approach was documented in the Stanford Social Innovation Review and is becoming recognized as a best in class approach for community based action.

Collective Impact relies on a backbone organization to guide the vision and strategy, as well as coordinate resources and measurement. Earlier this year the board of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati endorsed the Health Collaborative as the backbone organization to lead the community in achieving the region’s Bold Goals for Health. This is similar to United Way’s support of Success By 6 and the Strive Partnership as backbone organizations in support of the Bold Goals for Education and Partners for a Competitive Workforce in support of the Bold Goal for Income. The major health systems have also agreed to support the Health Collaborative in this role, as well as Interact for Health, the Hamilton County Public Health Department, Agenda 360, and Vision 2015.

“Achieving the Bold Goals requires a community-wide effort working against a shared agenda,” said Robert C. Reifsnyder, president, United Way of Greater Cincinnati. “We look forward to partnering with the Health Collaborative as it leads our community in developing and executing a plan to improve health outcomes.”

One of Mr. Ellingwood’s responsibilities will be to bring together business leaders, government, and other community resources in addition to the traditional health care stakeholders to inform the Collective Impact work.

Transformation in health care is often referred to as the Triple Aim: better health, better care, and lower cost. “We believe that as we improve the quality of care in our community, we improve health and at the same time lower cost,” said Craig Brammer, CEO of the Health Collaborative and its related organizations, the Greater Cincinnati Health Council and HealthBridge. “The aspiration is to improve quality and reduce cost so that health and healthcare become a competitive advantage for Greater Cincinnati when comparing quality of life and economic development opportunity.”

Mr. Ellingwood has been involved with the work of the Health Collaborative for many years. Most recently, he represented Cincinnati Children’s on the Health Collaborative Board and has vacated his board positions in light of his new role. He has also served as a past chair of the Greater Cincinnati Health Council and a member of the Board and Executive Committee of HealthBridge.
“Dee brings to the Health Collaborative the leadership skills critical to the success of this work,” said Brammer. “He has a deep understanding of the local health care system, the ability to manage competing interests around a complicated agenda, and the strategic planning background to put aspirations into action.”

Mr. Ellingwood earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah, and a master’s degree in economics, also from the University of Utah. Dee and his wife, Kaycee McGinley, have two adult daughters, Erin and Megan, and have been an active part of the Cincinnati community for the past 16 years.
