This course is designed as a train-the-trainer program and contains both awareness and operations level components. Module I is an awareness level course designed for a wide audience. This module focuses on a basic overview of hazardous materials, identifying a contaminated patient, controlling the scene and activating the hospital’s response plan. The operations modules II-IV are designed for hospital personnel who are part of a decontamination team and will be involved in decontaminating patients. These modules teach hospital personnel how to de con and doff Level C PPE and how to safely and effectively decontaminate patients who present at the ED. This course is designed specifically to prepare the participant to perform decontamination within a health care setting. It is NOT designed to teach decontamination within the “hot zone.”
Awareness Level Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize a Hazardous Materials Incident and identify hazards.
  • Respond safely and effectively using the hospital emergency response plan.

Operations Level Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the hospital emergency operations plan and their roles in the response.
  • Demonstrate how to select, don and doff PPE.
  • Discuss the hazards and limitations of PPE.
  • Describe various methods of decontamination in a hospital setting.
  • Describe the 1st Receivers role.
  • Describe signs and symptoms of CBRN victims.
