During a high-risk birth, the presence of a neonatologist provides the time critical, specialized care needed to minimize complications or even save a life. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) serves as a resource to assure neonatologists are available to assist at these births at many different labor and delivery hospitals throughout the region,
Lost in the shuffle
Keeping track of these deliveries involved a flow of paperwork between the physician or provider, the hospital, and CCHMC. Not surprisingly, it became common for some (or all) of the paperwork to become delayed, misplaced, or to contain incomplete information. This often made billing and patient follow-up difficult at best.
A vision for better workflow
Having the vision to look for a technology solution, CCHMC discussed the problem with The Health Collaborative and found a fit with its hb/exchange service, utilizing its master patient index (MPI). The Health Collaborative’s MPI utilizes complex algorithms to properly identify both patients and providers, and is the foundation of this solution. The Health Collaborative has the capacity to locate episodes of care provided by the CCHMC neonatologists – no matter where the care has occurred – across the region. This allows CCHMC to gather the data necessary to ensure an efficient workflow of communication to the patient. The reliable capture of data has greatly improved accuracy and made a positive impact to the bottom line of CHHMC.
