Mercy Serves AmeriCorps, our 2019 Inspire Gen-H Award winner, is recruiting a class of 10 AmeriCorps members to serve a full-time, 11-month service term in Mercy Health emergency departments throughout Cincinnati.
Since 2014, Ohio has ranked first nationwide in opioid deaths every year, leaving our community with an urgent need for resources and solutions. In response to this crisis, Mercy Health and AmeriCorps partnered to build Mercy Serves, a diverse, energetic, volunteer corps serving in Mercy Health Emergency Departments across Ohio to prevent and reduce substance and opioid use.
Mercy Serves members serve their local communities as part of a service-learning opportunity that incorporates frontline care experiences with professional development and networking. As a part of the broader opioid epidemic response, Mercy Serves AmeriCorps members provide patient education, substance use risk screening, emotional support, and referrals to treatment and social services in Mercy Health Emergency Departments.
“You’re actually going to be making a difference in people’s lives, even if it’s small,” shares Kylie Bethel, former AmeriCorps volunteer member. “You’re a part of change, and you’re changing the culture around substance abuse, and I don’t see why anybody wouldn’t want to be a part of that.”
Hear from other former Mercy Serves AmeriCorps members and program managers about their experiences with the program in this brief and informative video:
Full-time and part-time positions are available, starting early September 2022 and running through mid-August 2023, and recruitment is open now! Important to note that this is not paid employment, it is service term supported by a modest living stipend, education award, health insurance and other benefits.
