Mama Certified is a comprehensive approach that ensures hospitals are actively working to improve maternal equity.  On average, Black Moms are 2.5 time more likely to die form childbirth and 2.6 times more likely to experience infant loss in Ohio than any other race, regardless of education and socioeconomic factors.  Mama Certified addresses with an equity certification for Cincinnati birthing hospitals that recognizes hospitals for transparency, progress, and commitment to improving health equity across four focus areas. Mama Certified received funding from bi3 for the past 1 – 2 years.  It’s a partnership across Queens Village, Cradle Cincinnati, THC, and the birthing hospitals in Hamilton and Butler counties – UC Health, TriHealth, The Christ Hospital, and Bon Secours Mercy Health.  In February of this year, the first two areas have launched: Infant Care and Maternal Care.  Now at any time, you can visit mamacertified.org to see how local birthing hospitals tend to the needs of moms and babies. .

On February 29, 2024, Cradle Cincinnati and The Health Collaborative hosted a celebration for the launch of the Mama Certified website at Anderson Pavilion!  Tiffany Mattingly, The Health Collaborative’s Chief Engagement Office & VP of Clinical Strategies shared, “It was a beautiful event full of celebration, tears, pride, determination, and relentless energy.”  As evidenced by the photos from the event, and clips from this Channel 12 News segment – local moms and leaders representing all four adult hospital systems in Hamilton County were in attendance.

“Mama Certified is a model where all of our hospital systems here in Cincinnati said ‘yes’ to equity in turning their data externally facing on a website, which is unprecedented nationally.” shared Dr. Meredith Shockley-Smith, Executive Director of Cradle Cincinnati.

We encourage you to follow Mama Certified on its social media platforms for regular updates, and to spread the work to moms you know about this valuable resource.
